Art for Youth - from a Youth Perspective
By Elena (Mtree Teen Voice)
Expressing one's thoughts through drawings, writing, or other forms of art, as well as appreciating the art produced by others can contribute significantly to personal growth. Art encourages the constantly-developing youth to reflect on their dreams and provide them with opportunities to express those dreams. We often think about and make wishes for our dreams, but as we grow older, we tend to forget the dreams we had as children. Art is a way to eternalize those dreams and imparts valuable lessons by reminding us of beautiful memories and hope.
In the world of art, everything in a child's surroundings can become the subject of a masterpiece. By expressing one's happiness, unhappiness, and the multitudes of other feelings through artistic creations, individuals can learn to come to terms with their emotions and find the strength to overcome difficulties.
As a member of the youth myself, keeping a close proximity to the arts has not only brought me immense joy in my daily life, but has made the quality of my being much healthier. As a cellist, I’ve learned the significance of discipline, commitment, and collaboration through music. And as an editor for a literary magazine that showcases the works created by youth all around the world, I’ve acknowledged the power of amplifying the voices of the youth. The poems and works of prose I’ve seen address topics from as simple as the bliss of playing their favorite sport, to as complicated as coping with the loss of a loved one. Nevertheless, all these works are important outlets for any feelings or thoughts the youth may harbor.
Art is not distant from any of us. In fact, many things right before us can be considered art. That's why introducing art to the youth is crucial, so that they can experience the joy, pain, and beauty of life. And in turn, children can find solace in that beauty and express it. Finally, It was such a beautiful experience for me to collaborate in development of creative writing curriculum with Mtree staff and I hope I can listen to those melodies of minds right next to these youth in Kenya someday.
